Vintage Krampus Post Cards circa 1927 from Considered Trifles

$38.00

Two vintage post-cards from Vienna featuring Krampus, the Christmas demon who accompanies St Nicolaus in Eastern European lore. If children misbehaved, it was thought they might be kidnapped and beaten with a birch with by this hooved figure.

One postcard shows a couple in a very steamy embrace in the midst of a thorny thicket with the Krampus figure unseen by the distracted pair looming behind them in the bushes, his tongue in the classic unfurled position looking very satisfied. The other shows one Krampus carrying another on his iconic birch switch.

One of the post cards is addressed and written on in a beautiful cursive hand and is dated November 1927. Where the stamp would have been, part of the postmark remains; one is unused.
